Validation of the Aura High Resolution Dynamics Limb Sounder geopotential heights

چکیده
The geopotential height (GPH) product created from global observations by the High Resolution Dynamics Limb Sounder (HIRDLS) instrument on NASA’s Earth Observing System (EOS) Aura spacecraft is discussed. The accuracy, resolution and precision of the HIRDLS version 7 algorithms are assessed and data screening recommendations are made. Comparisons with GPH from observations, reanalyses and models including European Centre for MediumRange Weather Forecasts Interim Reanalysis (ERA-Interim), and National Centers for Environmental Prediction/National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP/NCAR) Reanalysis illustrate the HIRDLS GPHs have a precision ranging from 2 to 30 m and an accuracy of ±100 m up to 1 hPa. Comparisons indicate HIRDLS GPH may have a slight low bias in the tropics and a slight high bias at high latitudes. Geostrophic winds computed with HIRDLS GPH qualitatively agree with winds from other data sources including ERA-Interim.

Earth Observing System (EOS) Aura Science Data Validation Plan
Executive Summary I. The Aura Mission The Aura satellite is scheduled to be launched in 2003 in a sun-synchronous polar orbit for a nominal mission of five years. The four Aura instruments are: the High Resolution Dynamics Limb Sounder (HIRDLS), measuring infrared emission profiles from high resolution atmospheric limb scans behind Aura; the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS), obtaining limb emission...

[1] Nearly coincident observations of HNO3, HCl, N2O, and H2O in the vicinity of the northern polar vortex during the NASA Polar Aura Validation Experiment (PAVE) in January and February 2005 have shown reasonably good agreement between aircraft-borne infrared spectrometer results and results from High Resolution Dynamics Limb Sounder (HIRDLS), Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS), and Tropospheric Emi...

[1] Vertical structure and evolution of the wintertime Northern Hemisphere Annular Mode (NAM), the first Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) of geopotential height anomalies, are constructed from the 2005–2009 Aura Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) measurements in the entire middle atmosphere between 316 hPa ( 9 km) and 0.001 hPa ( 90 km). This is the first report of NAM structure extending into the...
متن کاملTerahertz local oscillator for the Microwave Limb Sounder on the Aura satellite.
The Microwave Limb Sounder on the Aura satellite has a radiometer at 2.5 THz to perform global mapping of OH in the atmosphere. The OH radiometer utilizes two Schottky-diode mixers pumped by an optically pumped THz gas laser local oscillator. The laser was first turned on in space on July 22, 2004, and has performed without issue for more than 30 months. The specifications, design, and modeling...
متن کاملSelf-broadened half-widths and self-induced line shifts for water vapor transitions in the 3.2-17.76 μm spectral region via complex Robert-Bonamy theory
Water vapor in the Earth's atmosphere is being studied in the 3.2−17.76 μm spectral region by the atmospheric infrared sounder (AIRS) on Aqua, the troposphere emission spectrometer (TES) and the high-resolution dynamics limb sounder (HIRDLS) on Aura, both part of the NASA EOS mission. However, the lack of sufficient data on spectral parameters will hamper the prospect of accurate retrievals of ...
